Flathead Lake... The crown jewel of Montana.

Flathead Lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States.  Lying in the Flathead Valley of Northwest Montana, the lake is more than 300 feet deep, 28 miles long north to south, and reaches 15 miles in width.

Winter Sunset

Unlike most of the large lakes you see these days, Flathead Lake was not created by the dams that are so common in the Pacific Northwest. Rather, the lake is a product of the activity of ice-age glaciers, and is fed by the Swan and Flathead Rivers.

The east shore of the lake, running some thirty miles between the towns of Polson and Bigfork, is filled with cherry orchards.  Cherries have been grown here for over eighty years.  Though, providing only 1% of Montana's agriculture, cherries are most certainly the most luxurious of all Montana's crops.
